Pediatric Allergy in Marietta, GA
Both food allergies and environmental allergies are very common in children and the symptoms can range from annoying to life threatening. At Cobb Pediatrics, our board-certified pediatricians and certified pediatric nurse practitioners can help you determine if your child suffers from allergies and formulate a treatment plan.
Not all children will experience an allergic reaction the very first time they consume a particular food. Some may develop an allergy later in life, which is why it is important to schedule an appointment at Cobb Pediatrics if you notice any abnormal symptoms, regardless of your child’s age. What Are the Signs of a Food Allergy?
According to NHS Inform, symptoms of a food allergy are on a spectrum from very mild to very severe. More mild reactions include an itchy mouth or throat while anaphylaxis is the most severe reaction.
Food allergy symptoms, especially anaphylaxis, will generally occur within an hour after eating the trigger food and usually within minutes. Children with food allergies can exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:
- Hives
- Difficulty swallowing
- Swelling of the tongue or throat
- Wheezing
- Nausea/vomiting
- Stomach cramping
- Dizziness
- A weakened pulse
- Circulatory collapse
What Are the Signs of Environmental Allergies?
Most people are familiar with seasonal pollen allergies in Marietta but children can also suffer from allergies to pet dander, dust mites, and molds and mildews that can be more persistent. While environmental allergies are not in of themselves dangerous the way food allergies can be, they can cause uncomfortable symptoms as well as increase the risk of asthma exacerbations and bacterial infections like sinusitis.
According to Healthline environmental allergy symptoms can include chronic runny nose and congestion, itchy throat, itchy watery eyes, headache, and fatigue. While it’s difficult to avoid the spring pollen in Georgia, much can be done to decrease exposure to allergens like dust mites.
