What Is a Telemedicine Visit?

A telemedicine visit is a virtual appointment with your child's provider, conducted via a secure video call from your phone, tablet, or computer. It works just like an in-office visit: your provider will listen to your concerns, evaluate your child, answer your questions, and discuss next steps, all in real time.

Telemedicine is available for many common sick visits as well as ADHD and behavioral health appointments. Not every concern can be addressed virtually, and our nursing team will help determine if a telehealth visit is the right fit for your child's needs. If an in-person exam is needed, we will let you know and get you scheduled right away.

What Happens During a Telemedicine Visit?

Here is what you can expect from start to finish:

  1. Schedule your visit. Give our office a call at (770) 727-6359, and our team will help determine whether a telemedicine visit is the right option for your child. These appointments are primarily available for established patients who need ADHD management or behavioral health follow-up. Your child will also need to be up to date on well visits.

  2. Watch for your confirmation. You will receive a text and/or email with your appointment details. Be sure to confirm and complete the check-in process before your visit, including any outstanding balances, copays, or deductibles.

  3. Log in a few minutes early. Click the link to your provider's virtual waiting room shortly before your appointment time.

  4. Meet with your provider. Your doctor or nurse practitioner will review your child's symptoms, ask questions, and conduct a visual evaluation.

  5. Get a care plan. Your provider will walk you through the next steps, including any prescriptions if appropriate, and let you know if a follow-up in-office visit is needed.

When Should My Child Have a Telemedicine Visit?

Telemedicine visits are primarily available for established patients who need ongoing ADHD management or behavioral health follow-up. These visits may be appropriate for:

  • ADHD medication follow-ups and routine management

  • Behavioral health follow-up appointments

  • Questions about an existing treatment plan, medications, or recent lab results

Most illnesses and medical concerns are best evaluated in person so your child’s provider can complete a physical exam. In some situations, a provider may determine that another concern can be addressed through telemedicine.

Not sure which type of appointment your child needs? Please call our office. Our team will help you determine the best option for your child.

How to Prepare for Your Child’s Telemedicine Visit

A little preparation goes a long way. To help your visit go as smoothly as possible:

  • Check your connection. Use a strong WiFi or Ethernet connection, not cellular data.

  • Find a quiet, well-lit space. Settle your child in a calm room with good lighting so your provider can see them clearly.

  • Take their temperature and weight beforehand and have those numbers ready to share.

  • Have a flashlight nearby. If your child has a sore throat or rash, extra light helps your provider get a better look.

  • Remove extra layers if breathing is a concern, so your provider can see your child's chest.

  • Log in a few minutes early to get settled in your provider's virtual waiting room.

  • If you have been waiting more than 20 minutes, call our office in case of a technical issue.

A note on medications: our providers will only prescribe antibiotics or other treatments when they are clinically appropriate. Your child's safety always comes first.
